Lynda Benglis has spent her forty-plus-year career making unpredictable, fascinating and sensual works in a variety of unusual materials. Fistful is no exception. Visually ambiguous at first glance – is it a clamshell? a mouthful of teeth? – the viewer must hold this little jewel of a sculpture to unlock its secrets. Once soft and malleable in Benglis' hands, it is hard and unyielding in ours. Place your fingers into the cool, sleek grooves set in the stainless steel and realize that, in a twist on the Glass Slipper, it only fits the artist's hands. But how can you say no to such an intimate invitation?
