Chris Piazza received his BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and his MFA from the Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is a Co-Founder of The Frostig Collection and owner of The Pour House Art Casting in Vernon, California. Without his incredibly generosity, The Frostig Collection would not exist.
Piazza’s reputation as a first-class bronze caster is well known. Only those close to him know that he is also a very gifted sculptor who rarely sells his exceptional bronzes. As Sam Messer (noted artist and Associate Dean at Yale School of Art) eloquently puts it, “Like Daumier, Chris Piazza is a great social satirist. His work expresses existential humor but is always poignant in its self reflection. I never tire of looking at my Piazza sculptures.”
Over the last decade, Piazza has been creating a series of small-scale bronze self-portraits. He seems intent on changing his visage in as many ways as possible, whether wrapped in bubble wrap and tape or covered in screws. The Frostig Collection is very fortunate to be able to offer Impression, the latest bronze from this series. After many versions of experimenting with his face emerging from crumpled paper bags, Piazza chose one with only a slight resemblance, but if you have ever met him, you would recognize that profile.
